How To; Shade Autumn Girls Coat

Hello Everyone
We are back today welcoming Autumn in by giving you a step by step tutorial on how to shade the coat on our Autumn Girl Digi Stamp. We first released this digi in 2016 – the thing I love about her is the movement I’ve tried to capture – with the wind blowing her coat and hair. The leaves also swirling in the background.

You could cut around autumn girl or die cut her – this way you get her with or without the leafy background.

What you’ll need:

* PROMARKERS
COAT; HONEYCOMB / GINGER / BURNT ORANGE
HAIR; CARAMEL / BURNT SIENNA / CINNAMON
SCALF & BOOTS; CARDINAL RED / RUBY / BURGUNDY
UMBRELLA; COOL GREY 4 & 5
SKIN; ALMOND / PUTTY / DUSTY PINK
*COLOURED PENCILS FOR BLENDING & SHADING

Choosing a colour palette;

Since we are colouring ‘Autumn Girl’ Digi I thought I’d go for an autumn colour palette. To choose my colours I often hop on over to pinterest & find a nice colour palette on there. Just like this one which inspired the colours I have used;

How To Tutorial; Let’s start shading

Step 1: to start lay a flat colour of the lighter shade to the coat. If using promarkers this will be Honeycomb

Step 2: decide which side the light is coming from so you can create shading – mine is from the right side, so shading will be on the left. I’ve gone around the coat putting in darker area where I think direct light will not hit – with promarker Ginger.

Step 3: with Burnt Orange I then go in with darker shading to add more depth. This is will be in similar places as the Ginger. Once I’m happy with that I’ll go back in with Ginger I pop more some shading in.

Step 4: to blend all the colours in – go back over the whole coat with your first colour (Honeycomb). You can now see there are you darker shading with some really light patches where the light will hit the fabric directly.

Step 5: to finish off the image I then use coloured pencils to add more shading & to make the colour pop a little more. Try & use similar shades of pencils to the alcohol markers as you can.
